Interior design runs in Marissa Wege’s blood. Her grandmother loved creating beautiful and welcoming spaces, and would put her skills to work often. As a child Marissa would watch and learn from the matriarch. Marissa recalls, “She always had a knack for interior decoration and her home would often be completely redecorated when I would stop in and this idea was always something I encouraged her to explore.”
The tradition of redesigning homes was passed along to Marissa when she purchased her grandmothers farmhouse, which is now available for rent on Airbnb. The rental is named Martin House, a tribute to her grandmother, Martin being her maiden name. Although her grandmother had put her heart and soul into the structure, over the years it became dated and in need of work. Marissa’s goal was to update the house and make it more comfortable, while adding her own style into the mix. She gave the house an overall facelift, renovating the kitchen, bathroom, and master bedroom. Wherever she could, she utilized pieces of her grandmother’s. Overtime she added elements that she found through her own antiquing and travels.
When Marissa’s grandmother became sick and moved into an assisted living facility, renovating the house became an activity they could share together. Marissa says “I would often go pick up my grandmother and she would come and help with painting or anything else she enjoyed. She got to see the home completed and always loved hearing about the guests we hosted there.”
When it comes to decorating a space, Marissa’s goal is to find a way to tell a story. With Martin House, the story has been the memory of her grandmother and the farm house that was so meaningful to the family. She says, “My hope is that through the decor and the land the home tells a story and that story is different for every guest, open for interpretation.”
Now Marissa shares Martin House and it’s beautiful story with others by making it available for rent on Airbnb. We were lucky enough to tour this beautiful home.
When you first arrive at Martin House you are struck by its bright white color and gorgeous wrap around porch. We visited in winter and there were cheery pine wreaths adorning the exterior.
The house is located off a main road and very easy to get to, but it also backs the woods. It has its own private entrance to the popular Lake Leelanau Trail.
The inside of the house is absolutely stunning. Each room is special in its own way, while still maintaining a cohesive feel with the rest of the house.
The first floor contains all the living spaces: the kitchen, dining room, several living areas, and bathroom.
There are many unique touches, you really need to take time to soak it all in. We especially enjoyed the use of artwork to take a room to the next level.
This couch was so cozy and made for the perfect photo opp to annouce our sister and brother-in-law’s pregnancy!
With so many amazing rooms it was hard to decide where to spend our time!
The upstairs houses all the bedrooms. You’ll find a master and two guest bedrooms. The master has a lofted ceiling and incredible claw foot tub.
The two guest bedrooms each contain two twin beds. This is perfect for families and also works great for larger groups who need additional sleeping space. The house sleeps six.
Marissa has been able to share her love of interior design by renting her cabin on Airbnb. Through the use of storytelling by design in each room, she has been able to keep a piece of her grandmother close. You can feel the love she has poured into each and every room. This is a one of a kind rental, you do not want to miss!
